Grounding on the reconstructed lines of the arms of this galaxy, the scientists made an inference which perplexed them: "The astronomers have found the spiral galaxy, which presumably rotates oppositely. Surprisingly, the galaxy named NGC 4622 apparently rotates oppositely to the expected direction. The image of space telescope Hubble NASA enabled the astronomers to suppose that the galaxy rotates clockwise, looking at the side which is nearer to the Earth. The image shows the object NGC 4622 and its pair of spiral arms filled with new stars (shown in blue). The astronomers are perplexed that the galaxy rotates clockwise because of direction of outer spiral arms. Most of spiral galaxies have the arms consisting of gas and dust, which are continued and some delay from the rotation of central part. But this galaxy has two 'leading' outer arms, which indicate the clockwise galaxy rotation. Additionally, NGC 4622 has also the 'continuous' inner arm, which is winded around the galaxy in the direction opposite to its rotation" [25]. |
